Monday 9 December 2013

Many students have shown an interest with trains and other types of vehicles. Students will be given the opportunity to make home-made trains or other creations on Thursday. Please send boxes, rolls, tubes, used wheels, bottle caps, string, pipe cleaners and/or any other odds and ends that your child could use to build. Please make sure all items are sent to school by Thursday.

We will be reading the polar express book in different ways and learning about different types of trains. We will be making train tickets and look forward to boarding the 'Polar Express' at Tecumseh Vista on Friday while we watch the polar express show.

We had a great first week of kindergarten. We are meeting and greeting many new friends in our class. We learned about Chester the Raccoon in the Kissing Hand. When you are finished making your hand to keep at school, please send it in your mailbag.

We also had fun reading, singing and dancing to "Pete the Cat Rocking in my School Shoes". Pete learns all about his new school... just like us! See below for the new song we learned:

Monday 28 January 2013

January has been a month full of fun... take a look and see what's been done!

Language and Literacy:
We created a list of animals that we think we might find
living in the forest.
After reading 'The Happy Day' (a story about lots of animals
living in the forest in the winter), we went outside to check
out our feeders that we made before winter holidays. We wanted
to see if any animals came to eat any of the food that we left
for them. We found clues left behind from the animals including
 lots of missing food!

We found lots of animals hiding underneath the snow. Then, we found
them a 'new home' - their matching letter (T - turtle, F - frog).

Then, we read their names and added it to the matching animal.

We, also, had fun playing games on the smartboard.
We read rhyming words and matched letters with the right word.

We read "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe". We are becoming such
good readers that many friends like to read during centre time!

We read a story about "Bob, the Snowman" who came to life.
We were pretty excited when Mrs. Mathers turned herself into
Bob! Some of us took turns acting like a snowman, too!

Introducing, our new "Bob"!!!

We learned how to play new games. This game is called
"Roll a Snowman". We roll the dice and read the directions to tell us
what part of the snowman we need to draw. We try to draw the whole snowman.

We love to write!

We love to read in tents!

We love to read with animals in tents!

We love reading big books!

We love reading all kinds of books!

We love reading together!

Marvellous Math:

We roleplayed and pretended we worked at McDonald's.
We had to give out french fries to all of our customers.
We had fun going to our McDonald's restaurant in our class afterwards
to make and sell french fries (and lots of healthy food, too!!!).

We measured and designed tall structures at the Lasy table.
We make and create interesting structures!

We learned all about shapes(circles, squares, triangles)
and geometric solids (spheres, cubes, prisms, cylinders).
We used toothpicks and marshmallows to create our own shapes and solids.
We even had one of our friends make and design, "The Dubai Tower".
Wow! What amazing inventors and engineers we are becoming!

We also used spheres (more snowballs) and a variety of craft materials
to make and create spectacular 3-D snowmen (and snowgirl) friends
that we brought home to share with our moms and dads.

We drew shape pictures.

Here are two friends drawing a shape vacuum monster.
We are a team... together we are better!

We played smartboard games to learn about shapes and solids.

We do dance math! We dance and sing the Hokey Pokey using shape puppets!

We explored and experimented with spheres (white snowballs)
and cubes (sugar cubes) at our snow table. We built interesting buildings and
experimented with materials to see what we could make. Some of our
friends learned through discovery that it is much easier to build enclosures with
sugar cubes and keep the snowballs inside!

We used bears (some of our forest animal friends) to
extend and create patterns.

Savvy scientists:

We dressed for the outdoors, investigated animal tracks and checked the food we had left
for our winter animal friends. Then, we had lots of fun in the great outdoors.

We decided to bring the outdoors in! We made coloured water,
added interesting creatures (spiders, bats, worms, etc.!) and
put them in our freezer. Once frozen, we used a variety of
tools and materials to dig them out of the ice. We explored
with salt to try to melt the ice and we used a variety of tools to dig out our critters!

After excavating with ice, we did an experiment that allowed us to explore
with hot water and our special 'snow salt'. We watched our snow salt dissolve in
the water. Then, we created some magic by painting over our beautiful winter
pictures with our snow salt mixture. Abracadabra... once our pictures dried,
we had an amazing winter snow frost all over our pictures.
Please come by for a visit to see our artistic pictures on display in our classroom.

We experiment with ice and liquids to make slush.

Mmm! Mmm! Slushy snow-cones are very tasty!

We build awesome structues with gears!

We build and design complex structues with a variety of blocks.

We experiment with primary colours red, yellow and blue
and make many new colours!

We are kindergarten science students in action!
